In the lone conference game between a couple of ranked teams in Week 2 of the college season the 13th ranked Stanford Cardinal host the 14th ranked USC Trojans. This game has Pac 12 and BCS implications and while each plays a tough schedule this season the Trojans may have the big advantage with a win since they do not have to face Oregon this season.
Stanford has the nation’s longest home winning streak at 17 games.
Last season USC snapped a 4-game losing streak beating Stanford with the unranked Trojans upending the 5th ranked Cardinal 20-17.
One big match up in this game is the USC pass rush and front line D facing a Stanford offensive line that only returns one starter from last season.
In their last games USC beat Fresno State 52-13 and Stanford beat UC Davis 45-0.
This season Stanford is 1-0 at home and USC is 0-0 on the road.
USC is 1-0 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-0 and Stanford is 1-0 ATS with an Over/Under record of 0-0 with no O/U line last week for the UC Davis game.
Stanford played a weaker opponent than USC did in their season opening rout, but still held UC Davis to only 115 total yards. This will be their first test of the season, especially facing USC QB Cody Kessler, who passed for 384 yards with 4 TD and 1 rushing TD in the easy win over Fresno State. The Trojans have a solid and young WR corps and will face a solid Stanford secondary.
The Stanford run defense also has a tall task in this game since the Trojans have a few RB’s that can get the job done and in the Fresno State win they rushed for 277 yards.
Kevin Hogan leads the Cardinal and the Stanford QB played well in the UC Davis win with 3 first half TD. One player the Trojans really have to worry about is WR Ty Montgomery, who scored a TD on a reception and punt return against UC Davis.
The Cardinal had a solid day on the ground against UC Davis with 149 yards. They have a RB by committee system and they will test the USC run D that did give up 157 rushing yards.
While the USC defense forced 4 turnovers their offense had 2 as well, which they have to avoid in this game.
USC is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall, 2-11 ATS in their last 13 road games, and they have an Under record of 11-5-1 in their last 17 games.
Stanford is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 36-17-1 ATS in their last 54 games overall, and they have an Under record of 7-2 in their last 9 games.
The underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 games between these 2 conference rivals.
Point Spread Pick
USC was super impressive in their opener carrying over their play from the last season that saw them win 5 of their last 6 regular season games. Included in that stretch last season was a 20-17 win over this week’s opponent Stanford. Sure a conference opponent at home laying less than 3 with revenge on their mind is a moneymaking angle, but I don’t see the Cardinal keeping up offensively here against the Trojans who put up 701 yards against the Bulldogs.
Take the USC Trojans +2.5
