Texas A&M Aggies vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Point Spread Pick
- Updated: August 26, 2014
Opening Line: South Carolina -10.5
Time: 6 EST Thursday August 28, 2014 on SEC Network
The 9th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks are the 10.5-point home favorite hosting 21st ranked Texas A&M in both teams opening game. This is the first ever meeting between these 2 schools and the loser will be playing behind the 8-ball right away with a loss in conference play.
One big question for the Gamecocks is will RB Mike Davis play? He is dealing with an injury and if he cannot go it will be a big loss since he rushed for 1,1134 yards last season. He may have a big season in store if healthy, as he is the main RB and playing behind a USC offensive line that returns 4 starters. If he cannot go Shon Carson and Brandon Wilds will get the start and will face an A&M defense that gave up an average of 222.3 rushing yards per game last season.
Last season Texas A&M was 5-7 ATS and they had an Over/Under record of 8-4 and South Carolina was 6-6 ATS with an Over/Under record of 5-7.
South Carolina has won 18 straight home games.
Since Steve Spurrior was named the head coach of the Gamecocks back in 2005 the team has never lost an opening game.
Texas A&M will be without the departed Johnny Manziel and Kenny Hill will be taking over under center. He has a decent WR corps and at least he will be facing a South Carolina defense that lost 3 of their starters on the front line and both of their starting cornerbacks.
While the Aggies lost their top 2 rushers from last season Trey Williams, who rushed for over 400 yards last season, and Brandon Williams may man the backfield and will have to play well to make things easier on Hill.
One key player that the Gamecocks have to keep tabs on is speedy WR Speedy Noil, who is a true freshman. He can also return kicks and take balls out of the backfield so whenever he is on the field South Carolina has to keep him from making big plays.
Senior Dylan Thompson takes over at QB for South Carolina and while the rushing attack is the main weapon for the Gamecocks he has some solid targets. Last season against Central Florida he passed for 261 yards and against Missouri he passed for 222 yards. The Texas A&M secondary must contain USC WR Damiere Byrd, who caught 33 passes for 575 yards and 4 TD last season.
The key to this game is if Texas A&M can stop the run and if they can do so and do not have to face Davis they have a solid shot to win this game.
Texas A&M is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 conference games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall, and they have an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 road games.
South Carolina is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, and they have an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 games.
Free Point Spread Pick
The lines maker is overplaying the loss of Johnny Manziel making the Gamecocks a double digit favorite. The Gamecocks have also lost their starting QB and some guy some of you may heard of Jadeveon Clowney. There are many new faces on defense for South Carolina adding more value to this play. We have the line opening at 11 with some downward pressure to today’s 10.5, so I’d get a jump on this now as we may see a 10 closer to game time.
