Oregon State @ Arizona State
Southern California @ California
Our Selection : After allowing an embarrassing 62 points to Arizona State the Trojan defense has turned it around allowing only 17 to Arizona in over three quarters before the Wildcats added two meaningless TDs late in the 4th. That solid defensive performance was followed by 14 points on the road at Notre Dame and 3 points to Utah last week. On the other side of the ball they have struggled in their last two with 19 vs. Utah and 19 versus the Fighting Irish. Injuries may be the cause with the TE and Tackle positions getting hit the hardest. Have limited experienced outs at the tight end and sketchy protection at the tackle spots had Trojan QB Cody Kessler under pressure. It didn’t help that star WR Marquise Lee missed last week’s game against Utah and may not play again this week. Fellow receivers Darreus Rogers and De’Von Flournoy are banged up but did play against the Utes.
All the talk has been about QB Sean Mannion and the TDs he and his fellow Beavers’ are putting on the board. They did hit falter against Stanford scoring only 12 points and you can be certain that USC will be looking at duplicating the Cardinal game plan. On the other side of the ball Oregon State has shown great improvement holding 3 of their last 4 opponents to 20 or fewer points and 4 straight opponents to fewer than 25. They catch a break playing what is expected to be a wounded Trojan offense and we expect the Beavers’ solid defense of play to continue this week.
Of course the Beavers and Trojans can both light up the scoreboard, but we feel that this game sets up as a defensive battle.
