In their last games: The Mariners beat the Oakland A’s 8-7 taking the last two of the series at O.co Coliseum. Timely hitting including HRs by Nelson Cruz and Richie Weeks was the recipe for success as the Mariners were out hit 14-7 in by the A’s. The Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 to salvage a win in the series after dropping the first two at Chase Field.
Here are some handicapping angles to ponder:
The Mariners are 5-2 in their last 7 games against the Dodgers in L.A.
The Mariners are 1-4 in Paxton’s last 5 road starts.
In McCarthy’s first start of the season he did get the win and struck out 9 in 5 innings of work, but also gave up 4 earned runs.
In Paxon’s first start of the season he gave up 2 earned runs in 6 innings, but took the loss getting no run support in a 2-0 loss to the L.A. Angels.
This season the Dodgers are 2-1 at home and the Mariners are 2-1 on the road.

The Dodgers did get the win in McCarthy’s last start, but he didn’t look great in the opener. He hasn’t faced Seattle since 2012, but his historical numbers against their lineup are not impressive with Seth Smith .333, Robinson Cano .273, Dustin Ackley .294 and Kyle Seager .333 all having success against him. Paxton took the loss in his first outing of the year, but his performance was solid allowing 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings. He has never faced the Dodgers which should give him an edge. Note that Los Angeles has not hit left handers well this season scoring 2.84 runs per 9 innings on .182 hitting.
