Oh, how the landscape in the NFC West has changed. The Cardinals lead the division at 2-0, the 49ers and Rams are at 1-1, and the most surprising thing is that the defending division and NFC champion Seahawks are at 0-2.
The 49ers had one of the best defenses in the league for a few years before a tumultuous off-season that saw a few retirements and the surprising release of the troubled Aldon Smith. Their defense was absolutely shredded last week in their embarrassing 48-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Arizona QB Carson Palmer is health and playing well and he led his squad to a 48-point outburst last week against the Bears in Chicago. He is 15-2 in his last 17 starts and heads into this game with the Cardinals as a 6.5-point betting favorite.
In their last games the Cardinals beat the Chicago Bears 48-23 and the 49ers lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 48-18.
This season the Cardinals are 1-0 at home and the 49ers are 0-1 on the road.
On the season the 49ers are 1-1 ATS with an O/U record of 1-1 and the Cardinals are 2-0 ATS with an O/U record of 2-0.
Colin Kaepernick did have a solid game in the loss to Pittsburgh, even though he was sacked 5 times, passing for 335 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT and Torrey Smith had 6 catches for 120 yards and 1 TD. However, the run game was stuffed and the defensive obviously could not stop the Steelers.
After rushing for 168 yards in the 49ers opening win over the Vikings he only rushed for 43 yards averaging 3.3 yards in the loss to the Steelers.
The Cardinals have been solid against the run this season, but their secondary has struggled and they only rank 28th in the league defending the pass.
Palmer has a deep and solid WR corps and in the Chicago game he was 17/24 for 185 yards with 4 TD, 3 of which went to WR Larry Fitzgerald. They will be facing a 49ers’ pass defense that was shredded in the Pittsburgh game giving up 369 passing yards and 3 TD.
Palmer got help in the Bears game with the RB duo of David Johnson and Chris Johnson combining to rush for 114 yards. On top of that they will have Andre Ellington back after he sat out the Chicago game with a knee injury. They will be facing a 49ers run defense that ranks 6th in the league.
Last season in Arizona the Cardinals beat the 49ers 23-14 and that was with Palmer under center before he was lost mid-0season with a season-ending knee injury.
The Cardinals have won 4 of their last 5 games when they are the favorite while the 49ers have lost 7 of their last 10 games when they are the underdog.
The 49ers are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall, 0-4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, and they have an Under record of 7-2 in their last 9 games.
The Cardinals are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall, 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games, and they have an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 games between these 2 teams.

The 49ers had a tough scheduling spot last week playing on the road against an opponent who had extra rest on a short week for SF. They should play closer to their opener this week playing a divisional foe making this a value play on the road side.
