Orange Bowl Betting Preview
No. 7 Mississippi State vs. No. 12 Georgia Tech
Time: 8 PM EST Wednesday December 31, 2014, ESPN
Mississippi State started off their year with an impressive 9-0 run due in part to the outstanding play of QB Dak Prescott who finished up the season with 2996 passing yards and 939 rushing yards. The Bulldogs were the 15th highest ranked scoring team in the nation with an average of 37.2 points per game. After such an impressive start one would think they would have ended up being part of the inaugural College Football Playoff but they failed to keep the momentum going. In the end they would be relegated into the SEC’s rep in the Orange Bowl after losing to a powerful defensive Ole Miss Squad 31-17 in the Egg Bowl.
Georgia Tech is relishing the opportunity to represent the ACC in the Orange Bowl against the Bulldogs. The Yellow Jackets finished the season losing to the Seminoles 37-35 a close game in the conference championship. Georgia Tech has the offensive firepower to keep up with the Bulldogs and QB Justin Thomas can pass and run as well as the Bulldogs Dak Prescott. Thomas finished the year with 1595 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing yards with a total of 965. Georgia favors its running game after putting up 331 yards against Florida State in the final and should continue the trend when they meet the Bulldogs. This game should be a close one with both QB’s having the ability to run the ball as well as passing it.
On the season Mississippi State was 10-2 straight up and a slightly profitable 7-5 versus the betting line.
Georgia Tech was a bettor’s best friend covering the spread in 6 straight on route to a very bankroll friendly 9-4 ATS record on the season. Straight up the Yellow jackets went 10-3 on the year winning 5 straight before falling by just 2 points to the Seminoles.

This comes down to if Georgia Tech can run the ball on Ole Miss. The Yellow Jackets played one of the best rushing defenses in the Nation on November 15th when they hosted Clemson and ran for 251 yards, so I don’t believe that will be an issue against the Bulldogs. GT can get exploited by a good scoring offense but Ole Miss did struggle against Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi and may not find the points easy to come by in the Orange Bowl.
