14th ranked LSU and Mississippi State get right down to business in SEC play with the winner getting a heads up in the toughest conference in the nation. The Bulldogs won their first game of the season and while they are at home against LSU they are still a 4-point underdog.
Last season at home LSU was shocked losing to Mississippi State 34-29. Before that loss the Tigers had beaten the Bulldogs in 14 straight meetings.
After their win over LSU last season MSU won 2 straight over top 10 teams and were the #1 ranked team in the nation. However, they lost 3 of their last 4 games including losing 49-34 to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
This is LSU’s first game of the season while Mississippi State beat Southern Miss 34-16 in their season opener. Last week the LSU vs. McNeese State game was cancelled due to extreme weather.
The Bulldogs failed to cover the 21-point spread in their opener against Southern Miss and the total for that game went Under.
While MSU has QB Dak Prescott returning there are only 4 new starters on offense and 4 on defense. Their offensive line is an issue and they will face a solid pass rush for LSU this Saturday.
Prescott was solid in the season opener passing for 237 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT. He also rushed for 75 yards, but the rushing attack is still an issue for MSU. They do not have a returning RB from last season that rushed for over 300 yards and in the win over Southern Miss Brandon Holloway was the 2nd leading rusher with 51 yards, but 35 came on 1 run. Ashton Shumpert had 207 rushing yards in the last 4 games of last season, but only rushed for 38 yards against Southern Miss.
The Bulldogs ranked dead last in the SEC last season in pass defense and that unit struggled in the season opener giving up 311 yards in the air.
Brandon Harris is the new QB for the Tigers and the McNeese State game may have given him confidence. Now he makes only his 2nd career start at a hostile environment at MSU. He was only 3/14 in his first career start last season, which was a blowout loss to Auburn. He will be facing a suspect Bulldogs secondary, but the run defense of MSU may be more important facing Tigers’ RB Leonard Fournette, who rushed for 1,034 yards last season averaging 5.5 yards per carry. In the MSU upset win over LSU last season he was held to only 38 yards on 7 carries and the Bulldogs need to keep him in check again.
LSU is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September and they have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.
Mississippi State is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
LSU is 9-1 ATS in their last 10 road games against Mississippi State.

Mississippi State hasn’t had a lot of turnover on their team and with the strong run defense still in place they should be able to hold LSU’s running back Fournette in check. Although LSU won last week at McNeese State with new QB Brandon Harris, we believe he will have a challenge against a hostile MSU.
