Georgia Bulldogs (1-0) vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1)
This game is only one on the college football docket in Week 3 between a couple of ranked teams. While this SEC game is big for both teams it may be vital for 1-1 South Carolina, as with a loss they will be in a 0-2 hole in the conference and likely out of the BCL playoff picture.
South Carolina has won their last 2 home games facing Georgia.
The Gamecocks were crushed in their home opener at home giving up 52 points to Texas A&M and then even with the W last week against East Carolina they were less than impressive. No wonder they are the 5.5-point home underdog.
Not only is 6th ranked Georgia the favorite in this game, but also they were stellar in their opening win over a ranked Clemson team and they had last week off so they will be well rested.
In their last games South Carolina beat East Carolina 33-23 and Georgia beat Clemson 45-21.
Georgia is 1-0 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-0 and South Carolina is 0-2 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-1.
This season South Carolina is 1-1 at home and Georgia is 0-0 on the road.
The one big question for the Gamecocks in this game is can they stop Heisman candidate Bulldogs RB Todd Gurley? He had a career high 198 rushing yards in the opener against Clemson with a TD and averaged over 13 yards per carry. In snapping the Gamecocks 3-game winning streak over Georgia last season Gurley rushed for 132 yards with 2 TD.
Hutson Mason had a solid game against Clemson and the QB can air it out, but stopping the run will be key for the Gamecocks. Against Clemson the Bulldogs racked up 328 rushing yards.
Mason may get the green light to air it out more in this game, as against East Carolina the Gamecocks did have 2 INT, but they gave up 321 passing yards as well as 132 rushing yards.
South Carolina has allowed 450 or more total yards of offense in back-to-back games for just the 2nd since Steve Spurrior became the head coach.
USC QB Dylan Thomson had a good game against East Carolina passing for 266 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. He has a solid WR corps and the offensive line has to keep the Georgia pass rush off him. One big key will be running the ball where Mike Davis has struggled so far on the young season. In his first 2 games he only has 116 yards and in the game last season facing Georgia he rushed for 149 yards. He will face a UGA run D that held Clemson to 88 yards on the ground in the season opener.
Georgia is 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games, and they have an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
South Carolina is 5-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win, and they have an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 vs. a team with a winning record.
In the last 9 games between these 2 teams at South Carolina the total has gone Under every time.
Georgia is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games in South Carolina.
The Gamecocks secondary has been atrocious so far this season, but they may have lucked out this week and may be able to gain some confidence against the Bulldogs. Georgia QB Hutson Mason will be making his first road start of his college career on Saturday and will be without a trio of his receivers.
The Bulldogs defense looked sharp in their first game of the season holding the Clemson Tigers to just 291 yards total yards and shutting them out in the second half. This will be the best defense that South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson has faced this season and arguably the best he has period.
I expect both teams to have difficulty putting up fast strike points on the board and with the total line the highest ever for this matchup the under appears to be a solid bet.
