#22 Clemson Tigers (1-1) vs. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)
In the ACC opener for both teams top-ranked Florida State plays host to 22nd ranked Clemson. The Tigers may be out for a little revenge in this game, as last season at home they suffered the worst loss to FSU since 1970 getting crushed 51-14. However, they are HUGE betting underdogs and already have a loss this season.
The winner of this game has gone onto win the ACC in each of the last 3 seasons.
Last season FSU had the nation’s top-ranked defense and an offense led by Heisman winner Jameis Winston. However, this season they have not looked dominant in narrowly escaping a big upset in their opener beating Oklahoma State 37-31 and only beating a weak Citadel team in their last game 37-12.
In their last games Clemson beat South Carolina State 73-3 and Florida State beat Citadel 37-12.
Clemson is 1-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 2-0 and Florida State is 0-2 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 1-1.
FSU is 1-0 at home so far on the season while Clemson is 0-1.
Florida State has won 10 of their last 11 home games facing Clemson outscoring the Tigers 425 to 167 in that span.
Winston has put up decent numbers, but not great ones and on the season he only has 3 TD and has 2 INT. Senior Rashad Greene leads the solid WR corps and for the season he has 283 receiving yards and is averaging 18.9 yards per catch. Clemson’s defense returns 7 starters from last season including All-American defensive end Vic Beasley, who has to pressure Winston and help with stopping the run.
Karlos Williams leads the Seminoles in rushing and is averaging over 4 yards per carry. However, the run game has been a little of a disappointment so far on the season. It is pretty obvious the Tigers have to play better run defense than they did in the season opening loss to Georgia when they gave up 328 rushing yards.
While Clemson has many familiar faces on defense they have some new faces on offense mainly the QB duo of Cole Stoudt and Deshaun Watson. Stoudt only has 1 TD pass on the season while freshman Watson has 4. FSU has to play good pass D facing a Clemson WR corps where the top 2 guys are averaging over 24 yards per catch.
The Tigers use a running back by committee and they need to run the ball well to keep the Florida State offense off the sidelines. If Clemson cannot run the ball they will be in big trouble.
Clemson is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall, 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a ATS win, and they have an Over record of 7-2 in their last 9 games.
Florida State is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games, 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games overall, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
Clemson is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against Florida State.
Free Total Pick
The rushing attack of the Seminoles will be the key here. If Florida State can run at will like Georgia did it will be a long day for the Tigers. I think that’s going to be the case here. Unfortunately the point spread line is way too high for me to consider. The total looks like a viable play with the Clemson offense struggling in the second half versus Georgia and in my opinion it’s another step up to the Seminoles. Maybe we’ll see a 45-10 type game.
