This game is being held at a neutral site at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils (0-0) vs. Texas A&M Aggies (0-0)
Texas A&M finished a disappointing 8-5 last season and the main reason was their defense, which was one of the worst in the nation. However, they have a new defensive coordinator and several key returning players and they should be much better on that side of the ball. They will be tested right away by Arizona State.
The Aggies still have question marks on defense, but the same cannot be said for their offense, which has several big-time playmakers.
Arizona State finished at 8-3 last season and while they are ranked 15th in the pre-season polls they are still the betting underdog in this game facing an unranked Texas A&M squad. With each team’s issues on defense this game should be a barnburner, which is why the total is set ay 66 points.
Last season Arizona State was 6-7 ATS with an O/U record of 7-6 and Texas A&M was 5-8 ATS with an O/U record of 6-7.
ASU is led by senior QB Mike Bercovici, who was the starter for the first half of the season before Taylor Kelly took over. He has a decent WR corps, but they will miss Jaelen Strong, who is now in the NFL. One of the big problems with the Aggies secondary last season was giving up big plays, which they cannot do in this game.
The big gun for the Sun Devils is returning RB D.J. Foster, who rushed for 1,081 yards last season and also was the 2nd leading receiver with 62 receptions for 699 yards. If Texas A&M can contain him and keep him from having a big game they should be in good shape.
Kyle Allen won the starting QB battle with Kenny Hill and he has a good WR corps led by the likes of Josh Reynolds, who led the Aggies in receiving yards last season, and Speedy Noil, who each had over 580 receiving yards last season. These guys can make big plays and the ASU secondary will need help from their pass rush up front. Allen passed for 294 yards with 4 TD’s in last season’s Liberty Bowl win over West Virginia and was named MVP for the game.
Texas A&M RB’s Tra Carson and Brandon Williams will face a promising ASU run defense, which ranked 49th in the nation last season.
Last season Texas A&M was 2-3 facing ranked teams.
